The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, is leading a quiet effort to find a way out of the ongoing war between the US and Iran.
According to the report, Caine has held private talks with senior officials in President Donald Trump's administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Vice President JD Vance, in an effort to forge a common position on the limits of continuing attacks.
Sources say the Pentagon believes airstrikes alone may not be enough to topple the Iranian government, with Trump opposing the deployment of ground troops and continuing to believe in using air power.
The United States' greatest concern is the depletion of its weapons stockpiles and air defense systems, a situation that could weaken the United States' ability to respond to retaliatory attacks from Iran.
