US President Donald Trump has made strong statements about the military capabilities of European nations that make up the NATO alliance, saying the countries have sufficient financial resources but have not built strong armies because they have relied on the United States for too long.

Speaking about NATO's collective security, Trump said that European nations have the ability to finance their own defense but have been dependent on US military assistance for many years.

"They're Europeans. They have a lot of money. They don't have a good military, because they've relied on us for so long. I told them, you can't keep doing that, NATO," Trump said.
